Guaranteeing patient safety
The safety of patients and staff is paramount – and investment in safeguarding facilities and infrastructure will guarantee the delivery of high-quality power for truly life critical applications.
By working with an original equipment manufacturer servicing is assured – and risks are controlled throughout the facility.

Monitor the overload levels thanks to Isolated Power Supply
Health facilities must maintain continued power availability, from security lighting to vital medical equipment. For Group 2 medical locations, continuity of care must be ensured, even in the event of overloads.
Ensuring continuity of medical care
In order to ensure the continuity of power, overload current protection must not be allowed to trip in the feeder circuits upstream and downstream of the transformer of medical IT system in group 2 locations. The installation standard IEC 60364-7-710, its European HD 60364-7-710 define the necessary requirements and actions.
The circuit feeding transformers in group 2 IT system are not required to be protected from overloads; only from short circuits.
This means that any related static transfer switches (STS) or electromechanical switches upstream of the IT transformer are not fully protected and their temperature must be monitored.
The overloads and temperature of medical IT transformers should be monitored.
In the event of a dangerous overload, a monitoring system generates an audible and visual alarm. The operator will then be able to offload non-critical loads to relieve the installation.
Socomec solution
The MEDSYS Isolated Power Supply and STATYS static transfer system
To meet overload management requirements, Socomec offers a range of healthcare solutions and equipment for group 2 medical locations. In case of an overload, our STATYS HC static transfer system (STS) generates an alarm. It continues to perform its transfer function with a high short circuit withstand. The medical IT transformer is equipped with a temperature sensor to detect overheating.
In a hospital setting, the ISOM Digiware system incorporates an insulation monitoring device (IMD) and a temperature measurement input. It is linked to an alarm report screen. The equipment mentioned above can be grouped into a compact package; the IEC 61439-certified MEDSYS Isolated Power Supply.

Ensure maximum availability thanks to insulation monitoring
Healthcare facilities must maintain continued power availability, from security lighting to vital equipment. In group 2 locations, an outage can pose a serious risk to operating theatre and the lives of patients.
Monitor insulation
In group 2 medical locations, the insulation in a medical IT system must be monitored. This ensures continuity of care and ensures patient safety. If an insulation fault is not dealt with quickly, there is a risk of protection tripping and switching off power to vital equipment.
In the event of a first fault, the fault current is low and does not pose a risk to the patient. The installation will continue to operate.
The insulation monitoring device generates an audible and visual alarm indicating the presence of a fault or an overload on the medical IT transformer. The alarm device must be visible at all times.
To identify the faulty circuit, using insulation fault locating devices is highly recommended.
To avoid a second fault and the protection tripping, the faulty circuit must be identified and repaired as soon as possible.
These requirements are set out in IEC 60364-7-710 and its European transposition HD 60364-7-710.
Socomec solution
ISOM Digiware insulation and power monitoring system
Socomec offers a range of high-performance devices to fully comply with the safety requirements of group 2 medical locations. In accordance with IEC 61557-8, the ISOM Digiware system consists of an insulation monitoring device for healthcare facilities. It can be used in combination with insulation fault locators.
The screen centralizes the insulation levels and alarms of the medical facility equipment and provides an alarm report for the operating theatres.
IEC 61439-certified, the MEDSYS Isolated Power System is a compact package that integrates the ISOM Digiware system, as well as an automatic source transfer device.
Socomec offers a dedicated service to regularly inspect insulation monitoring devices and fault locators.

Ensure the selectivity of protection thanks to Isolated Power Supply
Healthcare facilities must ensure the continued availability of electrical power, from safety lighting to vital medical equipment. To avoid a short circuit in a terminal circuit affecting other circuits in the installation, you must ensure that all the protection works in a coordinated manner.
Ensure continuity in the event of a short circuit on a terminal circuit
When defining the electrical architecture of medical locations, the hospital's various electrical protection must work in a coordinated manner, as required by the European installation standard HD 60364-7-710.
In the absence of selectivity, a terminal short circuit can trip upstream protection to turn off all or part of the medical facility.
Total selectivity ensures the activity and safety of patients can be maintained.
